ANSI B17.1-1967 covers the size, type and tolerances of parallel and taper keys and keyseats and this information is given in the following page. The sizes and tolerances contained in ANSI B17.1 standard are intended for single key applications only.

ANSI standard recognizes that there are two classes of stock for parallel keys. One is a broad negative toleranced bar stock and the other is a close plus toleranced keystock.

Definitions:

Bar Stock: General purpose, negative toleranced, cold finished steel stock for parallel keys.

Keystock: A close plus toleranced, cold finished steel stock for parallel keys.

Sunk Key: A standard form of key with rectangular or square cross-section in which the key fits into the keyseats on the shaft and the hub.
