In stress analysis of a member such as torsion of shaft, bending of beam, compression of a column, etc., cross sectional properties are usually used to calculate stress and displacement distributions.

Sectional properties calculators have been developed to calculate cross section area, second moment of area, section modulus, radius of gyration, center of gravity of the cross section and mass of a beam or column for standard profile types and geometric shapes. Profile types and geometric shapes which can be calculated with the calculators are hollow and solid rectangle, hollow and solid shaft (circle), I, T, C beams (channels), wide flange I beams, standard I-Beam, American standard steel channels, Aluminum Association standard I-beams and channels.

The formulas and parameters used in the calculators are given in the "List of Equations" sections of the calculators.
